When Kevin White and his wife decided that it was time to expand their family, they started with a pet. And their local humane society was their first choice for finding their new friend. But which type of animal would be the best fit?

It turns out it was a black cat with engaging green eyes – and a loving personality. “Mika seemed so out of place among all of the other cats,” Kevin explains. “He was almost pristine. He definitely caught our attention.”

Once home, Kevin and Mika got to know each other. “Everything he did was interesting to me,” says Kevin. “I hadn’t been around cats before so it was all new.” Although the couple laid down rules, like staying off the counter, Kevin quickly discovered that Mika ignored them. “He understands rules – but he’s even better at breaking them!”

Although Kevin wasn’t initially as convinced as his wife was that a cat would be the best addition to their household, Mika has sauntered into his life with ease. Now it’s hard for this illustrator and web designer to imagine a life without the family’s beloved feline.

“Mika is such a great cat,” says Kevin. “If he could juggle for visitors he would. He just loves attention.”

And now, with an active toddler in the household, Mika has become a friend to her as well. “Any cat who can put up with our daughter’s energy is amazing,” notes Kevin. Although she’s learned to be gentle with Mika, she’s not above trying to carry him throughout the house or tugging on an ear or tail on occasion – which Mika handles with surprising patience.

Mika also keeps Kevin company while he works on his illustrations for his freelance business. “He’s a great legwarmer,” Kevin notes. “If I could find another cat like him, I’d bring it home today.” And where would he go for his next pet? Right back to the humane society, of course. “Why go another route?” he asks. “You’re rescuing an animal in need. It’s a wonderful opportunity.”
