Michael Pfleghaar knew he’d bonded with Madison when
he first squeezed the squeaky orange football in the pet store.
“Madison grabbed it and started playing with it right
then,” he explains. “It became her favorite toy.”
For Michael and the border collie-Australian shepherd mix,
it was the beginning of a wonderful relationship.
Madison had been a gift for someone who wasn’t ready
to care for a rambunctious puppy. She was on her way to the
local humane society when Michael’s partner gave her
a home. An energetic four-year-old when Michael first met
her, Madison has since become a constant companion for the
artist.

“I've really gotten to know her and
love her over the years,” Michael says. And Madison
has managed to effect some changes in his life. “I’m
a clean freak and the thought of dog hair everywhere,
and on clothes really bugged me before. But now I’m
changed. I don’t mind the mess because she’s
such a wonderful, smart dog.” |
So smart that she’s learned to “sing” on
command and she can also fetch specific toys when asked —
like her favorite football.

Madison has also had an impact on Michael’s
art. “I hadn't really done any pet images before
her,” notes Michael. “She’s opened a
new door creatively.” His portraits of Madison and
other animals have earned him admirers, and he now does
numerous pet portraits for clients. |
Michael’s schedule allows him to work from home and
spend a lot of time with Madison. She has the run of the big
backyard and he also walks her in the 80-acre nature preserve
behind the house. “She gets lots of love and attention,”
he says. “She basically goes everywhere we do!”
| At eleven years old, Madison is beginning
to slow down a bit. But Michael and his partner are considering
a new puppy to be a companion for her. “We’ll
definitely adopt from a humane society,” says Michael.
“There are so many great dogs in need of homes.
It just makes sense.” |
